New songs for January 27th 2025

here they are: "Light It" by The Tano Jones Revelry:  A song that hits the sweet spot between rock and soul, "Light It" sounds like a song from another time! Given the psychedelic folk-rock-y vibes of their last adult alt radio hit, "Daisy," this is hardly surprising. I'm guessing both from the titular phrase and from Tano Jones' urging his listeners to "get higher" that this song is about drug use and the pleasure some derive from it. Whether you're a drug user or not, though, this song should be enjoyable to anyone who just wants to unwind and have a good time, regardless of the reason! "Raze the Bar" by Travis:  Post-millennial alt-rock royalty have come together for this song to create a song that really doesn't sound that "alt." Coldplay's Chris Martin and The Killers' Brandon Flowers lend support vocals to Travis' latest tune, "Raze the Bar." The song really feels more like a light ...

New songs for January 20th, 2025

here they are: "Ankles" by Lucy Dacus:  Lucy Dacus has tried her hand at all sorts of areas of indie, ranging from indie-pop to indie-folk to some power pop, but I've never heard her attempt the "chamber pop" sound until now, and she's good at it! There are orchestral instruments in this song such as cello and what sounds like a harpsichord that can't be easily found in her other material, which makes it stand out from her other stuff. Equally remarkable is her video for the song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcW_-uxy6dQ) which takes place at a museum (with Lucy as the painting) and stars another LGTBQ Lucy, Lucy Liu, as the curator. Anything to help out diverse communities during a time when the world just doesn't seem as open-minded as it used to be! "Bovine Excision" by Samia:  For a song with such a weird title, Samia's "Bovine Excision" has a surprisingly chill indie-folk sound (with gradual electro-pop elements added...

Here they are!! "Knockin' Heart" by Hamilton Leithauser:  Thus far, a lot of the songs that Hamilton Leithauser from The Walkmen has done as a solo artist sound more like folk-rock than they do garage rock. Hamilton's latest solo effort, "Knockin' Heart," might be an exception to the rule that takes his sound back to the Walkmen days! If the "Knockin'" in the title wasn't enough to convince that Hamilton has a bit of kick to his solo stuff, then listening to the song might do the trick! It even has a cool psychedelic-tinged guitar solo to boot! It's never made clear as to whether this song is a declaration of undying love or if it's a song where the intent is for Hamilton to get an ex-partner back into his life, but either way...this song slaps! "Messy" by Lola Young:  Already a sensation on the adult alt airwaves for about a month or two, it took me finding out that the song has hit the regular alt airwaves as well t...

here they are!! "Archbishop Harold Holmes" by Jack White:  This is a song that encapsulates rock music of the '70s in so many ways! The main riff of the song resembles Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz," it sounds like a Led Zeppelin song in its overall presentation, and any number of other bands from the era could easily be compared to it! What sells this song, perhaps, even more than its music, is the hammy vocals Jack White pulls off on it! He sounds like a deranged preacher trying to sell what he believes in as passionately as he can to his audience! The title of the song also brings preachers to mind, so perhaps that's what Jack White was going for there! "Carousel Horses" by Christian Lee Hutson: Nothing says "indie" like Phoebe Bridgers and Maya Hawke guesting on your song, right?! Well, that's exactly what you should expect to hear on Christian Lee Hutson's "Carousel Horses," which starts out with a propulsive indie r...
