New songs for July 6th 2026

My biggest blog in over a decade!! A whopping total of TWELVE songs (my fave number)!! Here we go!! "Black Dog Rabbit Hole" by Devon Gilfillian:  Perhaps Devon's most funkadelic song yet, "Black Dog Rabbit Hole" is a tasty blend of funk and hard rock in Drop D tuning that feels like a lost recording of an early Red Hot Chili Peppers song! No more Mr. Restrained Soul Performer!! Devon unleashes righteous fury on this track with abstract, psychedelic lyrics, and a guitar solo that roars like Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello!! I currently have no clue about what this song is about, but when Devon sings "Baby, it feels so good!" during the chorus, it's my only hint. And this song DOES feel good...in a spicy, sizzlin', hot summer way!! "Chauffeur" by The Womack Sisters:  If the name "Womack" rings a bell, then you're probably a fan of classic R & B music - and in particular, soul legend Bobby Womack. In case you...

New songs for June 2nd 2025

here they are: "Elderberry Wine" by Wednesday:  Not to be confused with the lively Elton John song of the same name, Wednesday's "Elderberry Wine" is a sweet, reflective country-rock song with lilting vocals. Lead singer Karly Hartzman says in the song that "even the best champagne tastes like elderberry wine." Not sure exactly what she means by this, but it sounds interesting! "Everyday Magic" by My Morning Jacket:  After the psychedelic yet still reflective "Time Waited" from earlier this year, MMJ are back with a more free-spirited and funky song with "Everyday Magic"! The song is fun and has somewhat psychedelic imagery ("a ripple in the fabric"). It's also one of the more danceable MMJ tunes, which adds to its fun vibes! "Inept Apollo" by Nation of Language:  Our last song is a largely synth-driven tune with an interesting title! The lyrics seem somewhat cryptic, though from what I can gather ...

New songs for January 20th, 2025

here they are: "Ankles" by Lucy Dacus:  Lucy Dacus has tried her hand at all sorts of areas of indie, ranging from indie-pop to indie-folk to some power pop, but I've never heard her attempt the "chamber pop" sound until now, and she's good at it! There are orchestral instruments in this song such as cello and what sounds like a harpsichord that can't be easily found in her other material, which makes it stand out from her other stuff. Equally remarkable is her video for the song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcW_-uxy6dQ) which takes place at a museum (with Lucy as the painting) and stars another LGTBQ Lucy, Lucy Liu, as the curator. Anything to help out diverse communities during a time when the world just doesn't seem as open-minded as it used to be! "Bovine Excision" by Samia:  For a song with such a weird title, Samia's "Bovine Excision" has a surprisingly chill indie-folk sound (with gradual electro-pop elements added...

New songs for October 14th, 2024

here they are: "A Fragile Thing" by The Cure:  Was The Cure's last single, "Alone," too long for ya? Fear not, then, because they have a shorter song for ya! The second single from The Cure's latest album in over 15 years, "A Fragile Thing" is a moody song, in typical Cure fashion, but it bases its sound with piano as its core instrument instead of relying on an orchestral wall of sound the way "Alone" seemed to. The guitar slowly seeps in, crescendoing to a solo towards the middle, but nothing too loud (I mean when have The Cure ever been too loud?! It's not their style!) The lyrics are more typical of an actual Cure song than "Alone" was. Instead of wallowing in despair and isolation, "A Fragile Thing" is a love song, which most Cure songs are, but more a love song in the way it depicts love as enduring than it is in the traditional way. "Aren't We One?" by My Morning Jacket:  Another song that sta...
