New songs for July 24th 2023

 here they are:

"Just the Once" by Metric: Not since Blondie has a female lead singer crooned so seductively to an instrumental backdrop that is equal parts disco and new wave. "Just the Once" is one of those songs that makes you want to get up and dance the moment you hear it! The lyrics are somewhat cryptic. No one knows just what Emily Haines means by "you said that it would be just the once." First of all, who places a "the" before the word "once"? Second of all, what does she even mean by "it" and "the once"? More than likely, she's referring to a sexual affair, but she never makes that clear in the song, instead preferring her fans to savor the mystery, making this banger of a song even more alluring than it already is!

"Just to Keep You Satisfied" by Inhaler: This song is a bit more chill than most of Inhaler's zippy, upbeat material. On "Just to Keep You Satisfied," the 2020's Irish alt-rock group sound about more like fellow Irish rockers, U2, than they usually do (although midway through, the song starts to sound slightly like Garbage's "Stupid Girl" for about 30 seconds). Lyrically, there's not much more to this song than the title already hints at. It's about a guy who's trying to keep his partner satisfied who struggles to do so.

"Road to Joy" by Peter Gabriel: This song is sort of a musical synthesis of what made Peter Gabriel so appealing in the '70s and '80s. Mixing world music, electronica, bits of prog-rock, and a slight funk influence, "Road to Joy" is a fittingly joyful and optimistic song. Metaphors involving nature and the cleansing of the soul permeate this song, which seems to be Gabriel's way of continuing to feel energetic and alive no matter how old he gets (he is currently 73). There is something very cathartic and almost yogic about this song, despite its somewhat trippy atmosphere!

"The Trench Coat Museum" by Yard Act: Yard Act could very well end up becoming the 2020's answer to what acts like Beck, Primus, and Cake were to the '90s! Rapped vocals over blasts of electronic percussion and funk-rock guitar are what make this song what it is! Every bit as quirky as those bands were too (I mean, what IS a "trench coat museum"?!) Unlike the three acts I mentioned, Yard Act are British, not American. The vibe of the song is essentially "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" (albeit not as hard rock influenced) meets "The Distance," something that's not very common to British alt-pop/rock...yet. Oh, and did I mention the song goes on for nearly 8 minutes?! You don't run across songs like this every day, do ya?!
