New songs for October 16th, 2023

 here they are:

"I'm Still" by Bahamas:  Bahamas live up to their island-y sounding name in this chill, beach-y track. A combo of Jimmy Buffett/Jack Johnson-esque "tropical" folk-rock guitar and a breezy wash of electric make this one of the ultimates in mellow rock for this year. Somehow, this song winds up being 5 and a half minutes, but it sure doesn't feel like it is. It's basically the musical equivalent of being in a spa and getting your back massaged. The lyrics tend to contradict the song's vibe, though, about feeling uncertain about life but trying to find reassurance nonetheless.

"Impressively Average" by Brigitte Calls Me Baby: Brigitte Calls Me Baby?! Are people running out of band names?! It's a cool name, but it's also one that says to me, "all the good names were taken"! Anyway, their debut single, "Impressively Average" is more impressive than it is average. It's hard to call a band with a Killers sound and Roy Orbison-esque vocals "average." Brigitte Calls Me Baby are a Chicago quintet, and their debut single was produced by Dave Cobb, whose work is mostly known for producing modern country-rockers like Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, and Sturgill Simpson. "Impressively Average," then, must be a first for Cobb, and what a first it is! A new wave-y, post-punk influenced sound mixed with tongue in cheek lyrics isn't exactly what you'd expect from a country-rock producer. Perhaps BCMB sought him out because they are big Roy Orbison fans, in addition to their love of more "alternative" bands like The Strokes and Radiohead.

"My Love Mine All Mine" by Mitski: Mitski continues showing off her eclectic musical range with her latest song, "My Love Mine All Mine." Summer's surprise adult alt radio smash, "Bug Like an Angel," was Mitski's first dip (to my knowledge, at least) into folk-rock, and as we head into fall, Mitski continues to surprise us with the ultra-smooth, almost lounge-like "My Love Mine All Mine." The song is barely even 3 minutes, like "Bug Like an Angel" was, but unlike that song, "My Love Mine All Mine" is a more alluring, enchanting song.
