New songs for November 6th, 2023
here they are:
"Mother Nature" by MGMT: I wasn't so big on MGMT when they debuted, as they were mainly an electro-pop band back then. However, they have since proven themselves to be just as fluent in psychedelic pop and even folk-rock, of which their latest song, "Mother Nature," seems to opt for the latter sound (though it briefly dips into psych-pop towards the middle). It's probably the calmest I've heard so far from their catalog, and probably the deepest as well, with lyrics about wanting to connect more to nature than to manmade civilization.
"Now and Then" by The Beatles: That's right...The Beatles!! They are only half a band at the moment, but thanks to the magic of AI, the Fab Four were able to resurrect an unreleased track that John Lennon originally recorded as a solo number after the band broke up. The song has created a lot of buzz among rock fans, and it's raced up the Adult Alt charts to number 20 in less than a week of it being on there! Must be pretty darn good, right?! Well...it is, but for anyone expecting another "A Day in the Life" or "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," you might be somewhat disappointed. It isn't as elaborate as those songs or as orchestral, but it tries to be. The song is a rare moment of sentimentality from the typically cynical John Lennon, singing that he misses "you" while never specifying who "you" is. That being said, though, just the fact there even IS a Beatles song after nearly 50 years of their breakup is pretty amazing in and of itself!
"Roll With It" by The Record Company: The Record Company typically have a retro sound, but this song takes it back even further in time than usual! "Roll With It" has a sound that's reminiscent of rockabilly, a genre that I never really thought would see the light of day in the 2020's, but The Record Company are keeping the rockabilly spirit alive with this song! The song is pure fun, perhaps the funnest that The Record Company have had so far, and great to dance to, too! We have a Beatles song followed by an Elvis Presley soundalike song. Ummm...what decade is it again?!
"The Tower" by Future Islands: Future Islands are a rather unique group among indie-pop groups. They don't really use guitar in their songs as much as synth, yet their mystical allure appeals to rock fans all the same. It is a jam that centers around D sharp/E flat, fitting with most of their songs, which are also typically in sharp or flat keys. The song's evocative imagery ("There's a tower in the ocean pouring through me") accompanies the ethereal vibe of the song quite nicely!
