New songs for December 4th 2023
here they are:
"Can't Believe We're Here" by J. Mascis: Like a lot of his solo stuff, the Dinosaur Jr. frontman's latest song leans more towards folk-rock than noise-rock (except maybe during the guitar solo part), but it still contains the raw, ragged sense of honesty and world weariness he is known for. The song seems to be a lament about a relationship he has gone through, with the titular "we" referring to him and his partner. Typical Dino Jr./Mascis disillusionment with life here.
"From the Start" by Laufey: Look out, Bjork! Another eclectic Icelander is on your path, and her name is Laufey (pronounced like "lay-vay"). Laufey has earned comparisons to other charmingly weird (or would that be weirdly charming?!) women in indie-folk-pop of the 2020's such as beabadoobee and Mitski, and with her unpredictable yet super catchy combo of indie-folk and bossa nova (of all things), it's easy to see why she has been compared to such musicians! Her debut song, "From the Start," seems to evoke imagery of Zooey Deschanel in a Wes Anderson remake of one of the Austin Powers films. While I doubt such a movie would ever be made, this song would be perfect for its soundtrack!
"Sinner" by The Last Dinner Party: One of the most unexpected smash hits of 2023 came in summer of that year with The Last Dinner Party's "Nothing Matters." The Last Dinner Party initially struck me as a more foul-mouthed Florence and The Machine, but the more I heard "Nothing Matters," the more I got to like that song and recognize The Last Dinner Party as a great band in their own right! Their follow-up single, "Sinner," is not punctuated with four-letter words the way "Nothing Matters" was, but true to its title, there is still something sinful (in a good way) about "Sinner." The song seems to be a sizzling tale of forbidden love where danceable pop hooks and electric rock guitar fuse together in harmony!
