New songs for April 22nd, 2024

 here they are:


"All the Ways" by The Secret Sisters (featuring Ray LaMontagne):  The Secret Sisters and Ray LaMontagne are both pretty popular among alt-country fans. Their first collaboration together does retain some of their country-rock roots, but mostly, it's a soulful, intimate ballad. It's a love song, pure and simple, but it's done in such a way that it draws you into its warm and tender ways!


"April" by Local Natives:  As if by coincidence, our next song is the same as the month it was released in! "April," in this case, though, is not the month, but the name of a person. In this psychedelic electro-rock number, Local Natives sing of what appears to be their latest romance, though the lyrics tend to be a bit on the abstract side, as one might expect with a group like them.


"Heartless" by Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats:  Perhaps the only song on this week's list that is more heartbreaking than it is romantic, "Heartless" by Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats is a powerful song nonetheless!! A country-rock song punctuated by bright bursts of brass, "Heartless" is a poignant song that tells of the heartache Nathaniel felt when he left his childhood home. I love how much music can heal a heavy heart like it does here!

 here they are: "An Arrow in the Wall" by Death Cab for Cutie: You never expected a mostly somber, folk-y group like Death Cab to get funky, did you? Well, that's what they do on their latest song, "An Arrow in the Wall." In the 20 plus years that Ben Gibbard and co have been around, they've never attempted a song like this one, which is probably to Death Cab what "Emotional Rescue" is to The Rolling Stones (who, coincidentally, will be mentioned in the very next song for this week): a slow-burning, disco-y number that never quite reaches a climax but is still a slinky, seductive song. New songs for June 20th, 2023

Yesterday was Juneteenth, so I decided to do my blog today instead of yesterday. Here are this week's songs: "Body" by Briston Maroney: Indie-folk-rocker Briston Maroney has added a bit more of a techno-pop influence to his music and blended it with acoustic guitar music in order to make his latest song, "Body," appeal to a wider audience than his previous material. The song, essentially, is a rumination on how life doesn't last forever, so we should make the most of it while we still can. Amidst slightly psychedelic flourishes midway through, "Body" is a breezy song overall that can really make you think about life! "Devotion" by Arlo Parks: Arlo Parks' take on neo-soul has been an interesting one. New songs for July 31st 2023

 It's the last day of the year, and we have 8 brand new songs! Here they are: "Bug Like an Angel" by Mitski: Perhaps the first Mitski song to dip into folk-rock territory, "Bug Like an Angel" continues to add new dimension and depth to Mitski's already eclectic catalog! "Bug Like an Angel" is a rather cryptic metaphor, but the "angel" part seems to refer to death by either drinking or overindulgence. The song is fittingly melancholy for one that has such a depressing theme, but ultimately more bittersweet than bitter. It manages to carry itself in a major key rather than a minor one, but it's still quite powerful! There is also religious imagery woven into the song, particularly at the end when Mitski says, "I try to remember the wrath of the devil was also given to him by God." Again, it's hard to make out exactly what Mitski means here, but my best guess is that the presumably now dead person being addressed in the son
