New songs for September 15th 2025

 here they are:

"Guess I'm Fallin' in Love" by Spoon:  A new single from Spoon AFTER they put one out last week?! I guess some bands like dueling singles!! Anyway, "Guess I'm Fallin' in Love" functions as the more melodic, new wave-y, psych-pop counterpart to the more blues-garage-y "Chateau Blues," so perhaps that's why Adult Alt radio has gravitated more towards this one (though the two songs seem to almost be neck and neck at this point). The song still has plenty of indie/alt irony to win over fans of more mainstream alt stations, though. Even the title of the song is headed by the word "guess," indicating uncertainty as to whether Britt Daniels even wants to fall in love in the first place. It's like he's trying to fight off affection at the same time he's trying to accept it.

"I'm Not Ready for the Change" by Nation of Language:  NOL's previous single, "Inept Apollo," was synth-laden, just as their newest single is, but it was more synth-pop. "I'm Not Ready for the Change" has a clear shoegaze influence! The song wouldn't be out of place in a song by a group like Slowdive! Even the synths themselves on this song have a druggy atmosphere, fading in and out throughout and almost sounding "drunk" in some parts. The melody to the song also meanders, not really following a "straight" pattern in some parts. The lyrics feel as surreal as the music is, mentioning laundromats and tar in the first verse for what seems to be no apparent reason.

"Lover Girl" by Laufey:  Sergio Mendes would probably be proud of a song like this one! "Lover Girl"'s slinky yet smooth flavor sounds a lot like something that Mendes would have come up with, even echoing his orchestral arrangements and rhythms at times! Don't let Laufey's playful seduction fool you, though. She's actually singing about how tough it is to be a "lover girl," as opposed to celebrating it. We dunno for sure, though. Maybe it's all just a trick to get unsuspecting audience members to fall for her!

"Puff of Smoke" by The Wood Brothers:  The Wood Brothers have always had organic, earthy music, true to their nature-y sounding name. But here, their lyrics also sound down-to-earth. It is the concept of "every day" itself that the brothers compare to a "puff of smoke." Over a sunny arrangement of acoustic guitars and bright organs, The Wood Brothers discuss the fleeting nature of time and how you shouldn't take it for granted. Sort of the (far) less pessimistic cousin of "Dust in the Wind" in terms of lyrical content! Enjoy each day while you have it, folks!
