New songs for August 3rd, 2026

"Blowin' Up" by Eddie 9V:  "Blowin' Up" describes exactly what Eddie 9V is doing on this song from the moment it starts! It's a slow-churning, barn-burning blues-rock that brings to mind what a slightly more countrified version of Gary Clark Jr. might sound like! For those wondering how he pronounces his name, it's not "nine-vee," it's "nine-volt," a nickname Eddie earned both from his quick temper and from the batteries he uses to power his guitar. Though there are country elements on this song in both its sound and its lyrics (it opens, for instance, with "I pulled into Nashville half past 3"), I'd say this is a blues song overall. The spirit of Southern rock lives on!

"Days Like This" by Late Night Thoughts:  More country influences weave their way through this week's blog, but this time in a more folks-y, banjo-driven way than a blues/rock one. The breakthrough song from Late Night Thoughts, "Days Like This," almost seems to be a throwback to the "stomp-clap-hey" movement of the early and mid-2010's. The song also has a simple but powerful message about appreciating the good moments while they happen, which is exactly what they mean when they say "Days Like This." Imagine Dragons power and optimism collide with Lumineers-y instrumentation in this song!

"New Beginnings" by Yard Act:  If "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" by Cage the Elephant were by a British rock band instead of an American one, it'd probably sound like "New Beginnings" by Yard Act! This song approaches blues/garage-rock elements through a lens that somehow sounds closer to Oasis than it does the White Stripes. To add some extra flavor to the song, horns peak through towards the end of it! This is also a song that continues the optimistic, present-embracing themes of the previous song on this week's entry, with the title of the song indicating the direction that Yard Act want themselves and their listeners to go in!

"Window" by Foo Fighters:  It's a rock tune, like most Foo Fighters songs are, but "Window" might be one of the few times Dave Grohl and co have made a straightforward love song! "You were a window cleaner/Letting in the sun," Dave says during the chorus. The structure of the song is interesting, too. It sounds like a grungier and less swagger-y "Bang a Gong" during the verses, but as the song approaches the chorus, it starts to sound almost Beatlesque, albeit with the Foos' trademark distortion layered on top of it. What can I say? Foo Fighters can pull off just about anything, including love songs!
