New songs for August 19th 2024

 here they are:

"Baby Blue Movie" by Cigarettes After Sex:  A song like this one really emphasizes the "sex" part of "Cigarettes After Sex"! What, you may ask, is a "baby blue movie," and what does it have to do with sex? A "blue movie" is slang for...well...one of those kinds of movies. So a "baby" version would simply be a softer version, but still one where the intent is to produce lewd, lascivious, lustful, lurid longings in lads and ladies. The sweet, buoyant music goes right along with that theme...ummm...kind of. What I'd actually expect is more "wah-wah" sax-laden funk music, but I suppose something of a sweeter nature can also go along with it. CAS also make us wonder, just what is this "always4tuesdays" that Greg Gonzalez refers to in the song? As it turns out, that has varying definitions! The version Greg probably meant is the one that refers to someone viewed as the most beautiful person in the world, but an alternate definition states such a person is basically a menace to society! Ummm...yikes!! I guess now I know why the band is called "Cigarettes After Sex." Not like I wanted to know that!! Make of this what you will, folks...Moving on...

"Favourite" by Fontaines D.C.:  After Fontaines D.C.'s surprise alt and adult alt radio hit, "Starburster," Fontaines D.C. go from a sizzling, stomping summer smash to a song of a more melancholy nature to fit with the bittersweetness of autumn. That song is "Favourite," and it has a bit more of a wistful indie-folk-rock flavor than the paranoid indie-funk-industrial vibes of "Starburster." The song's sweet sound goes right along with its introspective lyrics, along with its nostalgic music video that features film footage of the band members as children. Out with scorching summer, and in with feel-good fall!

"I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All" by Father John Misty:  At a whopping 8 and a half minutes, Father John Misty once again dips his toes into a musical genre he's never attempted before...disco! As part of a new greatest hits album (cheekily titled "Greatish Hits"), "I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All" seems to be a tongue-in-cheek exercise in nostalgia with cryptic poetry surrounding the lyrics. Towards the end of the song, FJM even jokes that the listener will "find him in Vegas doing his greatest hits." While it's unlikely that he will play Vegas anytime soon (or ever), FJM has been recording solo since 2012, marking a total of 12 years recording. There's no weird Grateful Dead-styled jam sessions or prog-rock-y bridges in this song, despite its unusual length. Instead, it's just a sarcastic but fun indie-disco song from start to finish!

"Piranhanana" by Shovels and Rope:  One of the heavier Shovels and Rope songs that leans more towards rock than country while still maintaining a distinctly country-rock sound, "Piranhanana" is a song with a tongue twister of a title with a rather twisted story behind it! The song's "dirty" blues/country-rock sound goes well with its surprisingly sordid subject matter. It is, in fact, about a boy who grows up in a brothel and his struggle to accept it. Yikes!! What kind of weirdo lets a boy grow up in a place like THAT?! (And when I say "weirdo," this is not the good kind of weirdo!!) As if THAT wasn't enough, the song also centers around the boy's sister and her involvement in this putrid place of perverse practices! Why did we start AND stop this week's list with such explicit songs?! Maybe next week will have cleaner material. Excuse me while I go take a shower!!
